Black Swedish Hen, this is a Swedish breed of domestic chicken that is considered to have originated with chickens transported from Mozambique to Norway by sailors sometime in the 17th century. Since then the breed has adapted to a northerly climate, but has retained the rare quality of black skin and connective tissue.
The current form of Swedish Black Hens has been given the status of a land-race breed, and all Swedish entries in gene banks can be traced to a group of chickens that came to Sweden around the turn of the 19th century. In the year 1956 this flock was bought by two brothers in Bullarebygd The Swedish Association for Land-race Breeds has preserved this breed in a gene bank since 1991
When your eggs arrive, please unpack them and allow them to rest in a carton, large end up, for at least 8 hours before placing them in the incubator.
Please be aware shipped eggs can be a risk before bidding. I do not offer refunds, accept returns or ship free replacement eggs. If you cannot accept the risk associated with shipped eggs, please consider buying live chicks from a hatchery. Please be sure you agree to these terms before bidding.
I get a good hatch here on the farm but cannot guarantee your hatch rate due to postal handling, incubating methods, etc. Please leave feedback on the condition of the eggs when you receive them and I will leave feedback for you. I send fresh, clean eggs packed securely via USPS PRIORITY MAIL.
~~~~~Chickens have lived in Sweden for around two thousand years (around 1000 for the Swedish Black Hen). During most of this time, they lived in small flocks among poor farmers, free ranging on small farmsteads. Over the centuries, several breeds emerged that became adapted to this situation. One of these were the Swedish Black Hen.
Then, some hundred years ago, industrialisation came about, changing the way chickens were kept. The traditional breeds were rejected, paving the way for profilic egg layers and specialised meat birds. These new breeds were not kept free or in small numbers, but locked up in their thousands in factory like conditions. Since people saw no value in the traditional breeds, they went all but extinct.
In the 1980’s, the attitude started to change. People started to see that keeping the traditional breeds around had both ecological and cultural value. A major search started, and several old breeds were found, that had been kept by stubborn old farmers who had refused to give in to the industralisation.
The Svarthöna/Swedish Black Hen is are one of the most beautiful birds I have ever seen. Svarthöna’s are very hard to find . They are the true melanistic breed black, the feathers ,skin, bones,and meat ,they lay a small to med eggs & have a great personality. We use only, all black birds for breeding. But in this breed or any other all black breed, you can get white toes , most will turn black. You can get silver/ white ear lobes this is not uncommon. The comb could get a reddish tint. It’s called leakage, or an occasional white feather,if you get any of these traits, it is part of the breed. However, you should NOT use them for breeding. They should be culled from the flock.
I will ship your eggs the same day they are laid in a USPS PRIORITY MAIL box. I always include extras.
Guarantee:  We guarantee you will be shipped the freshest, cleanest, unwashed eggs available on shipping day, and packaged in a manner that I have been successfully using for many years.  However, we can not guarantee the way your package will be handled by the USPS employees while it is in route to your destination.  Nor, can we guarantee your percentage of hatched chicks; since the incubation conditions inside your incubator or with your broody hens are completely out of our control.
Please leave feedback on the condition of the eggs when you receive them & I will leave feedback for you.
God bless and Good luck.
